The Somerville Promise Alliance (SomerPromise) is a citywide campaign to ensure that every child living in Somerville achieves his or her greatest potential, graduates from high school and is prepared for college or the work force. SomerPromise brings together representatives from the city, its public schools, nonprofits, and other service providers in order to improve opportunities and educational outcomes for Somerville’s youth.

SomerPromise began in 2009 with the support of Mayor Joseph Curtatone, the Somerville Public Schools, Tufts University’s Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development, the Somerville Housing Authority and many local non-profit providers.

SomerPromise is one of many nationwide efforts that recognize that not all children are given an equal chance at success and are working to close the achievement gap with a broad level of support for children and families. We work closely with Somerville’s public schools and a coalition of nonprofit service providers to help families and schools ensure their students’ success and academic achievement. Listed below are some of the ways SomerPromise network participants are working in Somerville to achieve our goals:

  • identifying areas in which we can better support children and families
  • creating new and innovative programs to fill gaps in services and improve student achievement
  • enhancing the academic components of after school programs
  • creating strong linkages between organizations to coordinate services for children and youth
  • helping parents and families to engage with their children’s education
  • understanding parents’ and families’ priorities for their children’s education and future
  • tracking student improvement and using data to shape programs and priorities
